I'm serious. Boo can flip one moment to the next into this monster. She will sweetly say "I love you Mommy so much" and two seconds later she screams so loud I lose my hearing momentarily (true story).

It's puzzling how one child can be so desperately extreme. I have had moments of wanting to call the pediatrician just to have someone tell me this behavior is normal. I've had many more moments of being pushed to my limit.

One day outside, I was standing watering the garden and Boo was screaming about something ridiculous. It was incessant and loud and it was not stopping.... I gave her a little squirt of water with the hose. I couldn't help myself and as she ran away crying I felt a little bad but not really.

Other times I have found myself laughing.... or crying... or screaming.... just to try to cope. I think I have tried just about everything and certainly when I lose my cool she flips out even more. But who can stay level headed day after day hour after hour? Certainly not me.

What works? I'm not really sure but some things are definitely more successful than others:

I give her plenty of choices and tons of opportunities to be "the boss" 'cause we all know how much she loves that!

I try to talk respectfully to her (while expecting the same from her in terms of how she treats me).

Challenges - a mom from Boo's preschool first told me about this. 9 times out of 10 if I ask Boo if she wants a challenge it will pop her out of any mood. She loves to dust, wipe off the table, help with laundry, find a "missing" thing. It's simple, I just say "would you like a challenge?" she says "yes" and I give her something to do.

I try to find structure to each day even if it's as simple as telling Boo the events of the day.

Limits and lots of them. As many choices as I give I give probably as many limits.

Careful wording - many times I will carefully word my requests with so it sounds like a choice even if it isn't. "You could brush your teeth now if you want to or after you play with your puzzle."

Sometimes I forget it all and lose it anyway. Wait!? Maybe I'm turning into a three year old too.

77 degrees and Sunny

I am fortunate to live in a state where most days are 77 degrees and sunny. There are those few "winter" months of rain and lower temperatures but not really much to complain about. I'm having a lot lately. I need a haircut and the baby pooch is getting me down. I think that combined with sick babies and lack of adult interaction has been downright BAD for me.

Another thing... you know when people write status updates something like this...

"Spent the weekend laying around reading, doing whatever I wanted whenever I wanted with whomever I wanted. Oh and I slept a lot and ate with both hands free and no one touching me, pulling on me, ripping my shirt off to nurse, wiping their snot on my shoulder. Had lots of mind numbing sex in the middle of the afternoon every day"

Well something like that anyway.... I feel like throwing my kids at them and running away... anyway here's how my status update would go...

"Spent the weekend carrying around a screaming, teething toddler with a fever. Her sister was also in a somewhat bratty phrase and in between bossing me around she was constantly underfoot constantly. Slept very little sometimes with a tossing and turning baby next to me. Ate as fast as I could with children hanging off me, pulling my shirt off demanding to nurse and dressed in a shirt covered in snot. Sex? What's that?"

Good night.

Noodle and Boo

I have loved Noodle and Boo products for awhile. Having a baby with sensitive skin sends you flying around for safe, gentle skin products. I found haven in the Noodle and Boo Ultimate Ointment for diaper rash, eczema and cradle cap. But for this review I had the opportunity to try out the Ultimate Cleansing Wipes.

They were so soft and lovely for Pumpkin's skin. They can used for little faces, hands and other clean up as well. I liked that they are tested for sensitive skin and deemed hypoallergenic as well as alcohol free. There is a light and pleasant fragrance. This did not seem to bother Pumpkin's skin or Boo's when I used it on her face and hands. My husband even commented on how nice these wipes were - the fact that he noticed is pretty amazing!

These are posh little products for baby. The quality is exceptional yet the price a bit steep. A 72 count wipe package is $9.50. Being a regular Costco shopper, that's a comparison of $0.13 a wipe (Noodle and Boo) to $0.03 a wipe (Costco). That's a hard sell but I could definitely see myself picking these up from time to time. Also I did feel like I had to use less of the Noodle and Boo Ultimate Cleansing Wipes to do the job.

*I received a package of Noodle and Boo's Ultimate Cleansing Wipes free for the purpose of completing this review.

Just a moment

It's tricky to get even a moment somedays. Who knows?

Today we had one of those days you need. Stayed in jamies until late, got half dressed and stayed that way, played and laughed. It was nice. Eventually we headed out for a long walk and some errands but the slow start was necessary.

So the girls spent some time pulling each other around on the parachute. It's a slightly dangerous, but full of giggling, activity. And, most importantly, it gives me a free second to sit down.

Don't forgot the quick thumb sucking break too....

The Learning Tower

I finally found a Learning Tower on craigslist and I think it's safe to say we are all in love. Although Pumpkin doesn't look overjoyed in this picture (she's been sensitive lately to say the least), both girls love it. They love the high vantage point and being part of the action in the kitchen. I have used it several times to cook together and then pushed it over to have them help wash up.

Who knew washing dishes could be so fun?!

The Learning Tower is just a fun thing to have around. I have wanted one for awhile mainly once Pumpkin started wanting to join in on the kitchen fun. We had been using a small step stool but with two kids fighting over it it was getting dangerous.

*This is not a paid review. Of course I won't but I think I need to start figuring in retrieval emails into my blogging time estimates.

Today has been long. I'm tired and really cranky and as a result so is everyone else. Boo has been knocking a lot during nap time which makes my blood boil. I just want peace. Last week I was sitting outside with her marveling at the miracles of motherhood. Watching her and just feeling in love... today... not so much.

I yelled. Really loud and then I yelled again even louder. Surprisingly I felt worse after, like I had joined the ranks of being a 3 year old myself. Two days ago it was blissful here, the girls were playing well. I actually got some stuff done when they were awake. Of course part of the time they were swinging on a swing hanging from a over-the-door hook that I didn't know about. But no one got hurt and they seemed to be having fun. The swing is now hidden.

I was feeling this wonderful happiness about life. "Oh this is fun, we are having a great time" - la la la, let's sing. Then SLAP here comes reality of being tired, arguments, eating crap and feeling crappy <del> there's a surprise </del>. This isn't new. It's actually really old news but you know how things kind of wear on you after awhile. It's wearing.

Boo actually napped yesterday (in her tunnel) and I welcomed those silent hours that ever grown so distance lately. Not behavioral, three year old stuff (amazingly enough) but actual drama. On Monday she fell backwards and hit her head. As blood dripped on my arm I found myself realizing that all those times I held my breath when the girls fell were practice for that moment. In a mad scramble I got her to the doctor for some really awful, painful numbing shots and three stitches. She did great and our doctor, once again, amazed me at his skill and patience as a pediatrician. We were both exhausted from the ordeal and I feel it still.

As we were walking today, I was watching the girls interact. At 3 1/2 and 19 months they are in love with each other. Boo hugged Pumpkin tight but gentle <del> after knocking her down accidently</del> and said "I love you so much Goo". I had to stop myself from sobbing at the sweetness of it. It was an overwhelming wonderful feeling. Pumpkin will follow her big sister anywhere. I catch her sneaking looks at big sis seeking approval. As Pumpkin screams at the top of her lungs <del> her latest thrill seeking adventure</del> she will pause and look at Boo waiting for feedback. If she gets a scream in return she dissolves into giggles and starting again.

It's like so many times, I stop myself from wishing away the hard times as life rushes past.

Sukey's Circle! I liked these principles behind Sukey Molloy's approach. There is a innocence and simplicity to the DVD that you don't get from larger corporate type productions.

There were two songs featured on the DVD: These Are My Eyes and Tick Tock. Sukey's plushy friends, Sunny and Tick Tock join her for fun dances and twirling rhythms. This DVD is great for children that like to get up and move with the music. Sukey invites participation as she dances around the screen.

Sukey's Circle! can be purchased online for $19.95.

*A free copy of Sukey's Circle was received for the purpose of this review.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://www.askmissmommy.com/2010/06/sukeys-circle-dvd.html' title='Sukey's Circle! Some really funny moments and frankly some sad ones.

We have been heading to the pool more and more these days as the temperatures creep up. Juggling two in the water solo is... interesting to say the least but so far fun. I watch them very carefully and hit the times when we are practically the only ones swimming.

Boo loves jumping in and splashing. Occasionally she goes under and while it's great practice it can be alarming for her sometimes. So alarming I guess that she reached up to grab for me and grab my suit instead. My suit that was cute and maybe should be have more secure as my entire left boob flashed out. Lovely. With my hands full, holding Pumpkin on one side and Boo on the other, I didn't have the hands to react very quickly. No one seemed to notice but the lifeguard actually said goodbye to us and wished us a good day. Politeness reward for boob flashing?? Who knows. Not that my boobs are that great after nursing <del> still nursing </del> two babes but oh well.

Another random note, our lovely pee cat got in a nasty cat fight which is kind of funny because she is all of 5 pounds. Nevertheless, she proceeded to get bit in the head and developed a huge abscess. Close to $600 later, two vet visits, disgusting drainage and a cone collar - she is resting comfortably. Oh good.

So for my sadness, there are times in life where you know something. You can feel it. You don't maybe have proof or anything substantial but you know. And I knew.

Boo can be difficult to parent, to say the least. She is fiercely independent, strong willed and determined. Very much like someone else I know well <del> me! </del>. But these are the things I love about her most. She is wildly affection at times, wanting to be smothered in kisses or smother someone else. She has a deep soul like she knows the secrets of the world but can't share them. The singsong merriness in her voice almost brings me to tears I'm so grateful for her. While her vivid, wild screams make my ears ring. She is a nonstop chatterbox that grows completely still and silent in new situations. She gives away kindness and love so freely yet can be downright mean. I wouldn't change her. Even those nasty moments, even those really hard days. I wouldn't change them because that's who she is and I love her.

And I'm sad today because someone just doesn't love her like I do. I know it's inevitable. I know. But it hurts me so much - to my core - that it almost consumes me.

Thymes Daily Commute Kit

It's been awhile since I did a review and I figured it was time. I also figured it was time for something for me! Thymes offers some really fun, herbally products. I reviewed one of their Thymes Essentials Experience Kits - the Daily Commute.

It was a perfect blend for a mom-on-the-go (aka me). Even more perfect are the attention to details: environmental friendly, safe and gentle and botanically derived ingredients.

The first items in my kit was the Instant Hand Cleanser. Of course, a necessity while out and about. I do wish it wasn't alcohol based as I'm not comfortable using alcohol based cleanser for the girls and try to use them on a limited basis for myself. A bit strong alcohol smell and not too much herbal.

Face Mist... ah love!! I giggle when I admit this is my favorite thing ever! Excuse me while I do a quick spritz. Oh! Roses, cool mist, lovely. I love this little treasure. At first I couldn't figure out why I would need this but after the first mist I was in love. It really is refreshing and a fun treat to pamper yourself.

Who doesn't like a good Lip Balm with some SPF? A nice addition to the kit and makes it feel complete. All and all a fun product. I could go without the cleanser (maybe a foaming non alcohol substitute instead....) but I loved the Face Mist and Lip Balm. This retails for $26. Thymes offers many, many other fun products.

*This kit was received free from Thymes for the purpose of review.

SWAGGER WAGON

This may be laugh out loud several times!! Maybe it's because there is nothing going on... well, there's a lot going on but nothing really new. Anyway. Here's today just because....

I ate too much chocolate and my stomach hurt.

Yes I know, I'm supposed to not eat chocolate anymore, I decided this... because... well, my stomach hurts when I do. But I love it so much!

My husband and I argued about vacation because that's what we do every time he takes time off. How is it a vacation for me if he works on projects around the house and I watch the girls?!? We'll work it out.

Maybe we should start going away instead of doing "fun day trips together".

The cat is meowing for her dinner from her cage in the back. I'm sure I have blogged about the pee cat that now must live in a huge cage when she's indoors because she has ruined our house. (Which has been fixed now after huge effort and lots of ripping up of flooring). Have I mentioned our small cozy house now must make room for this huge cage....?

Boo is playing in her room. This is her new night time ritual. We put her to bed. She waits until we shut the door and then runs out of bed, turns on her light and plays. Then after a bit (anywhere from 15 minutes to 30 minutes) she decides she is tired and goes to sleep. I have to admit I love those little sneak peeks we now get as we tiptoe in to turn off the light. She is so peaceful in her sprawled out sleep.

Oh which leads to my next random thought. We are working on exiting the su-su (pacifier), yes she is 3 years old but NO I don't want to hear any comments about it. So today I'm asking her when she might be ready to get rid of it. First she misunderstands me and thinks she might need 5 minutes with it immediately (we only let her have it at bedtime). I inform her that's not going to happen and attempt to rephrase my question.

Me "Do you think you will be done with it someday soon?"
Boo "Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday!!"

Okay... that went well.

<img src="http://signatures.mylivesignature.com/54487/201/9155798EA46C603569CA23F94ACD7C21.png" style="border: 0pt none ! My second born, my baby. Kind, calm, happy baby with a fiery will that explodes with force. Grace came into the world fast, in the middle of the night, giving me only 2 hours to get to the hospital. She was immediately absorbed in nursing with a passion that has yet to diminish.

The focus of my little story, though won't be on her birth but yet her darling eyes. Back in April 2009 (wow a year ago) I posted about Pseudostrabismus. We continue to monitor her eyes after that just to see what would happen. Would the periodic "real" crossing go away or increase? It increased and in January my baby got glasses.

Before we got the glasses though I had some struggles. It was really hard to get the attention of the optometrist (let's call her Dr. S). I didn't actually blog about this at the time (or at least I don't think I did) but my first check in appointment where I voiced my concerns didn't go well for me. Dr. S didn't seem to believe me as she couldn't elicit any crossing. It was frustrating to say the least. I left there feeling frustrated, angry and disappointed. After some thought and time to cool down I called the office and voiced my concern asking to speak with another optometrist.

My wish was granted and we headed back the next week for visit with Dr. M. This time I felt respected, as part of Grace's team and not just an uninformed bystander. But I was still frustrated. Dr. M couldn't elicit the crossing either. Finally at the end of the appointment, Grace was sitting on my lap looking at my necklace and she crossed. Never have I been so excited about a somewhat negative thing ever. Dr. M was able to see it in action and validate my concern that, yes it was an issue and true esotropia.

The thing about Grace's vision is in order to see any crossing she has to be super focused (literally and figuratively) on something close up. Which she frequently is but it's not the standard way they test vision. The "tests" are done too far away. Grace is also quite young to be given an Accomodative Esotropia diagnosis. It usually appears around 2 years old and she was around 14 months. So I was relieved to have a professional see what I was talking about and note how to test Grace's vision for the future.

Grace got glasses in January with +200 prescription* (meaning she is farsighted within the mild category). Today we went back for a recheck. Her prescription has increased to +450 (which is now in the high hyperopia range). I'm still a bit confused about the long term outcome for Grace. As far as I know, the best case scenario is to lessen the strain on her eyes (the increase in prescription means her eyes are relaxing so that's good) and to wean her from glasses as her eyes get stronger and she gets older. I'm trying to stay neutral and just take it one day at a time. We are also patching using a partial occulsion patch for 30 minutes a day.

*Many people post about prescription written as a "+4.5D" number. I was only told a +200 or +450 so that's what I know. Anyone have words of wisdom on that??

Interruptions

I have felt like things have slowed down around here. How I can miss the good stuff like that? Folding a heaping pile of laundry certainly isn't better. I'm trying to maximize my babysitting time where I frantically run around doing all those fun things.

But I do find my time at the computer pretty limited. It was a clear margin so everything is gone. It's over. Nothing more to add. I will be visiting my dermatologist twice a year from now on just to monitor everything. By the way, when they gave me the antibiotic to take in case of infection it would have been awesome to know ahead of time it might cause a yeast infection. Thank you for that unexpected gift!

__________________________________________________________________
A while back I had my standard mole check appointment with the dermatologist. I have a fair complexion and freckles so this is kind of a necessity for me that coupled with skin cancer (precancerous) in my family.

As I waited for my results during my follow up appointment I had the standard "hurry up I need to run errands", "my kids are with a babysitter that I only have for two more hours" thoughts. When the nurse told me my results were "atypical" meaning it could turn into cancer or nothing could happen I was surprised. Surprised as in tears. Wait, did she just say cancer? While I don't have cancer or even a precancerous result I wasn't expecting any mention of the word. I wasn't prepared.

Fast forward a couple of months to Monday. I spent an hour and a half lying my my stomach as a plastic surgeon removed the mole. The "journey" to find a plastic surgeon was enough to almost make me lose confident in the medical profession. Why is it so hard to treat women that are breastfeeding? Is it really that hard to look up safe medications? Apparently it is. Frustrating doesn't begin to describe that experience. I'm happy to say it's over and I ended up with a great doctor. Now I wait for the second test results and hope it's good news.

Here's more info on Atypical Nevus:

I copied this info straight from the American Academy of Dermatology mainly because they said it better (with pictures) then I could.

An atypical nevus can vary in appearance. Since it has the ABCDE features of a melanoma, it is important to have a dermatologist examine all moles.
A stands for ASYMMETRY; one half unlike the other half.
B stands for BORDER; irregular, scalloped or poorly defined border.
C stands for COLOR; varied from one area to another; shades of tan and brown, black; sometimes white, red or blue.
D stands for DIAMETER; while melanomas are usually greater than 6mm (the size of a pencil eraser) when diagnosed, they can be smaller.

P.S. What is the occupation of a child? Simply put, it's play. Learning and growing in the area of fine motor development is crucial to a child's development of play and ultimately helps facilitate their later ability to be a successful student.

By profession, I'm a pediatric occupational therapist although I spend pretty much all my time being a mom. Boo is now 3 years old and it is getting easier to pull out some of my work stuff and start working on fine motor skills. It helps me too because I get to dust off those distance corners of my brain and start thinking OT again. Let's explore development and have some fun.

Prewriting -
There are lots of fun ways to work on prewriting skills. I recently pulled out these wood pieces from Handwriting Without Tears (HWT). I use a lot of their material for writing practice.

I should tell you that these are intended to practice capital letters but as you can see I broke the rules a little. Forming capital letters is much easier than forming lowercase and should be worked on first. Another great thing you can work on are the concepts of "top", "middle" and "bottom". I have found the best way to start working on these concepts is on your own body and have your child model it. For example, "put your hands on top of your head", "where is your middle?", "your toes are at the bottom of your body". You get the idea. Forming letters involves knowing where top, middle and bottom are and many letters start at the top. In fact, the HWT program has a song about "always start your letters at the top".

Using something tangible helps with these concepts too. You can touch them, move them and physically identify the top, middle and bottom of the pieces. I also likes how it simplified letter formation to "little lines", "big lines", "little curves" and "big curves". Boo picked up these terms easily and had fun finding the different shapes.

The Mommy Pedestal

I was talking to another mommy friend last night about the magnitude of motherhood. I have been thinking about this a lot. My girls are with me all day and it seems most days our moods overlap and intertwine. Almost sickly sometimes. I don't feel like I'm able to have a bad day, or even a bad moment for that matter, because it reflects right back to them. If I lose my temper with Boo she loses it and can't recover until I have gone in there. I get so frustrated with her sometimes but there she is screaming at my husband "I want Mommy!!!". I just spend all day with you and then I yelled at you but yet, still, she wants Mommy.

Let's call it the "Mommy Pedestal" - you are put up there each day and no matter how bad you screw up your children still want you, only you. It's a huge responsibility. Sometimes it seems like a burden but I don't want to undermine it with that word. It's a privilege. Even more so if you do a good job.

Some days though, I just want down.

Check me out!!

Want to know more about me?!
