The Safe Sippy and Klean Kanteen Sippy Cup

UPDATE:
I have had a lot of comments on these cups. We have been using them for a year now and I have some updates. The Safe Sippy is no longer being used: as noted in another comment, the attachment is gone and works differently. I originally took out the sippy attachment because Boo was having a really hard time drinking from the cup. Now it just leaks everywhere, I can't seem to get the lid on securely and frankly, it just become a pain.

I still like the Klean Kanteen so would recommend that one out of the two. I do not find it to be spill proof however, and we have had many leaks. I think the Foogo sippy cup may offer a better option - while it's smaller (therefore holding less liquid) we have had less leaks and it's easy to clean and more durable. Plus the cup is insulated so doesn't get chilly to the touch.

The Safe Sippy and Klean Kanteen Sippy Cup are my next products up for review. I choose to look at these together because they have a lot of similarities yet offer some unique features. Let's start with the similarities. Either of these cups are a smart choice due to the consideration in materials used. Both are made of stainless steel which, to be brief, is durable, non toxic and resistance to staining or corrosion. The lids are made of polypropylene #5 plastic. This is a very stable plastic and free of Bisphenol A, phthalates and DEHA. The choice to use a plastic mouth piece was made by both companies due to the fact that teeth and stainless steel do not mix well - ouch!! Klean Kanteen offers a screw on stainless steel top if preferred .

Boo has able to hold both bottles easily. I found the Klean Kanteen to be slightly easier to drink from - it seemed like Boo also had an easier time with it. The spouts are very different though so that could be a factor (I'll get to that more later).

The Safe Sippy, as you can see, is brightly colored. It also comes in blue or teal with orange handles and top. The handles are removable for continued use as your child grows. The spout is no-leak and shaped like a straw to promote good speech development. The sleeve around the stainless steel "body" is made of thermo plasticized rubber which helps insulate the cup. I found the lid to be a bit tricky to put on the first few times. I wasn't sure if I should push it on or screw it on. This did lead to a big spill but after I figured out it's a combination, push and then screw, the lid was very secure. This cup retails for $14.95.

The Klean Kanteen Sippy Cup comes in one style with two sippy adapter spouts. The adapter spouts are no-leak and made by Avent.

Klean Kanteen also sells a variety of other accessories, including sports caps, screw on lids and larger sized bottles (up to 40 oz). The sippy adapter sits inside the rim and screws on easily. This cup retails for $17.95 (includes 2 sippy adapter spouts).

Both websites offer extensive information on the importance of providing safe, fun products. I was impressed by both and the quality of their product.

thanks for the info. I am currently trying to decide between the two cups. I think I may go with The Safe Sippy because the bottle will not get cold unlike the Klean Kanteen.

Thank you for the review. We have the SIGG right now for our toddler. I'm not thrilled with the sport-type top, so I was looking at both of these products as an alternative. Given that I couldn't see them in person - your review was very helpful. I think I'll go with the KK (which is what DH and I use anyway).

We have 4 of the SafeSippy cups and I have to say out of the 15+ different cups we've been through, we dislike this one the absolute most - and I cannot express that enough. I loved the look of them and the fact they were supposed to be "safe" for my kids so I purchased 4 right off the bat. I have never been so disappointed with a product.

1. The valve doesn't stay in - EVER. With the design (there is nothing holding it in place - it's just a rubber piece that slides into a hole - keep in mind there is liquid involved to assist it to slide right out), the only way it could possibly stay in is if it wasn't ever moved around, which I don't know of too many toddlers that don't toss their sippy around. It only takes less than 2 minutes for the valve to come out then the liquid pours freely all over my house. We constantly had to fetch the valve out of the bottom of the cup with a utensil.

2. The single ply stainless is cold and sweats.

3. The rubber sleeve to prevent problem 2 is a nightmare. The directions tell you to "simply put on the bottom of the cup and roll on". It's rubber, it sticks to itself - it doesn't just "roll on". However, it's extremely easy for our kids to pull straight off so I was constantly spending over 30+ minutes reassembling the cups all day long.

4. Liquid gets up under the rubber sleeve and although the directions tell you that you can leave them on - this is not the case. We had to remove them every time we washed them to clean the gunk under it and deal with the pain of putting them back on. As the cup gets dented up (as the directions even tell you it will), the sleeves gets looser and looser, allowing more liquid to get under it. Liquid also stays up under the handles - we had dried-on milk rings.

5. They dent extremely easily - my daughter caved the entire side of hers in within 5 minutes of use, halving the size of it.

6. Even when I can get the valve to stay in, they leak profusely. The valve is too far away from the end of the spout and liquid stays trapped in-between to squirt all over the place. The directions even tell you they will leak.

7. The handles broke in half on all 4 of our cups within 2 weeks. For a $17 cup, the plastic needs to be made of something not as flimsy.

When I contacted the company to complain how awful the cups were - they ADMITTED that I'm not the only one with these same problems with the cups and that they have even tried redesigning the cups to fix the problems mentioned (particulary the valve not staying in), which apparently they did not accomplish.

I cannot even begin to tell you how much we cannot stand these cups!!! They went to the trash. The only positive thing I have to say is that I was given a prompt refund.

Do not buy into hype or pretty looks.

I think the issue you're having with the Klean Kanteen is due to the Avent topper you're using. I have a similar sippy (http://stainlesscups.com) and have the same issue with the top. Still love the idea of a safe drinking container. Just don't let it fall on its side!
